POST - TEST (Cases 1 - 10)

After you finish these cases, go to NEXT CASES (11-20)

Following completion of the didactic lecture, residents will complete this post-test, with 35 surgical pathology reports.  For each case, the resident will document the CPT code(s), the amount billed for each code and a description of the tissue or stain for each code. The resident must document how many of each code is billed (88305 x1, 88307 x3, etc). For the surgical pathology reports that contain multiple specimens/stains with the same code, choose the correct number of items from the drop down list and in the description be specific about which specimens or stains are included. For example, a case with a stomach biopsy, a colon biopsy, an immunostain for H. pylori and an immunostain for CK-7 would be documented as follows:

CPT Code

Charge per Code

# items

Case X

x 2

1 Colon biopsy, 1 stomach biopsy

x 2

IHC for H. pylori, CK7

An additional two questions regarding the amount billed for various codes will also be included.  For this portion of the module, the resident will be provided with the relevant pages of the CPT coding book, a list of billed amounts for the charges, as well as the PowerPoint presentation.

Review each surgical pathology report and enter the billing code(s)/charge(s) that would be applied to it using the drop-down menu of CPT codes. In the next column, write a brief description of what specimen type/special stain/etc is applied to the billing code (For example 88342- CK17; 88313- trichrome, 88305- cervix biopsy).
