HIGH RESOLUTION AND LOW COST STATIC TELEPATHOLOGY

DISCUSSION

Our work demonstrates a static telepathology system of low cost (< $ 800 US) that uses high resolution images. This system combines conventional slide photography, followed by scanning of the slides and transmission of the digitized images through the Internet. The images presented here were of significantly better quality than those obtained with medium resolution TV cameras which cost at least twice ($>1,600 US) our proposed system.

This technology may have special advantage in pathology laboratories with limited economic resourses such as those located in underdeveloped countries. This is also applicable to pathology laboratories located in isolated rural centers, attended by a solo pathologist, and where the conventional mail is not fast and/or reliable.

The time used to process the six cases presented here, of approximately 3 hours, allowed the submission of pathology cases via the Internet to pathologists from all over the world. In many cases, the diagnosis was obtained on the same day of submission.

The only major advantage in the use of high resolution digital cameras was that of a shorter time (approximately 1 hour for the six cases) for the processing of images.
